MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) recognized two officers who were wounded while trying to disarm a colleague involved in a shooting incident in North Cotabato province on Dec. 28.
In a statement Tuesday, Police Regional Office-Davao Region (PRO-11) Director Brig. Gen. Leon Victor Rosete said Cpl. Kent Maurith Pamaos and Pat. Russel Love Tapia of the 11th Regional Mobile Force Battalion were awarded the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (Wounded Medal), emphasizing the PNP’s commitment to honoring those who go above and beyond the call of duty.
The injured officers received PHP100,000 cash each from PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil and another PHP50,000 each from Rosete.
Pamaos and Tapia were manning a border checkpoint in Barangay New Opon, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur when they were fired at by Cpl. Alfred Dawatan Sabas, who had shot dead a passenger inside a Mindanao Star bus.
The two officers attempted to disarm Sabas, who was reportedly intoxicated, but the latter opened fire and fled. He was later apprehended in Barangay Kinuskusan.
“Their bravery and unwavering dedication to duty, even in the face of great danger, deserve the highest recognition. These officers served as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who wear the uniform to protect our communities,” Rosete said.
Rosete said a double frustrated murder case has been filed against Sabas before the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor in Digos City.
On the other hand, a separate complaint is set to be filed in North Cotabato for the killing.
The suspect also tested positive for illegal drugs after a screening and confirmatory examination conducted by the Regional Forensic Unit-11. (PNA)
