ILOILO CITY – Two members of the Komiteng Rehiyong Panay (KR-Panay) were killed and several high-powered firearms were seized in an encounter with government forces in Barangay Katipunan in Tapaz, Capiz, on Saturday.

“Based on revelations from former comrades and confirmation from the family, the fatalities were identified as Benmark Laguerder, alias Anjino, serving as a finance and logistics officer of Squad 3, from Brgy. Poblacion South, Oton, Iloilo, and Edwin Penequito Gregore, alias Popoy, a Squad 1 member from Brgy. Pinamalatican, Sigma, Capiz. Both were remnants of KR-Panay,” a report released by the 82nd Infantry Battalion (82IB) said on Sunday.

The 82IB, together with the 61st IB and the 12IB, all under the Philippine Army’s 301st Infantry Brigade, responded to information from residents about the presence of the rebels in the area when fired upon by around seven rebels, resulting in a 10-minute firefight around 7:45 a.m.

The government forces also recovered from the encounter site two M16 and one M653 rifles, one rifle grenade, one 40mm high explosive round, four blasting caps, 12 backpacks, one bandolier, 10 M16 magazines with 281 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, and assorted medicines and personal belongings.

Brig. Gen. Nhel Richard Patricio, commander of the 301st Infantry Brigade, said the timely reports of the residents were vital to the success of the operation.

“This operation proves that peace and security are possible when the community, particularly the local government and security forces, work hand in hand. To the remaining members of KR-Panay, we urge you to surrender, lay down your arms, and embrace peace. The government is ready to support you in rebuilding your lives together with your families,” he said.

In a separate statement, Maj. Gen. Michael Samson, Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, commended the troops for their swift and decisive action and the local community for the success of the operation.

“This victory is not only a testament to the dedication and bravery of our soldiers, but also to the overwhelming support and vigilance of the people of Tapaz. The timely information provided by concerned citizens was instrumental in the success of this operation,” Samson said.
Samson reiterated his call to the remaining members of the communist terrorist group to give up their armed struggle.

“Return to the folds of the law, reintegrate into mainstream society, and avail of government reintegration programs such as the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) and the amnesty initiatives,” he added. (PNA)
