MANILA, May 22 (Mabuhay) –The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday reported 6,258 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, bringing the total tally to 1,171,403, as five laboratories failed to submit data on time.

According to the DOH, this brought the number of active cases to 55,531. Of these, 93.5% were mild cases, 2 % were asymptomatic, 1.8% were severe, and 1.4% were in critical condition.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 1,096,109 after 2,586 more patients recovered from the illness.

This is the first time in six days when less than 3,000 recoveries were recorded.

Meanwhile, 141 new fatalities brought the death toll to 19,763. Ten duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

According to the DOH, 18 cases that were previously tagged as deaths were reclassified as recoveries while 74 cases tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths.

Data also showed that 58% of the country’s intensive care unit beds were in use while 40% of the mechanical ventilators were occupied.

In the National Capital Region, 56% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 40% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.

Earlier, the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. assured the public it had enough funds to cover the unpaid claims it owed to hospitals amid complaints that the state health insurer’s obligations were rising to billions of pesos. 

Meanwhile, the number of Filipinos abroad who have tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rose to 18,658 on Friday with 24 more infections, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The DFA said four more patients have recovered from the illness, bringing the total to 11,400, while five new fatalities brought the death toll to 1,168. There are 6,090 patients still undergoing treatment.

Data from the DFA showed a total of 3,799 cases in Asia and the Pacific Region with 1,231 patients still undergoing treatment. Recoveries and fatalities in the region were recorded at 2,536 and 32, respectively.

Meanwhile, 10,473 Filipinos have tested positive in the Middle East or Africa. Of this, 3,796 are active cases, 5,913 have recovered, and 764 have died.

Europe has also reported 3,403 confirmed cases with 949 patients undergoing treatment. The region has recorded 2,324 recoveries and 130 fatalities.

In the Americas, a total of 983 Filipinos have tested positive with 114 active cases. A total of 627 patients have recovered while 242 have succumbed to the illness. (MNS)
