MANILA – Zane Kallos registered a triple-double as Ateneo de Manila University pulled off a 74-65 victory over De La Salle-Zobel to boost its semis bid in the UAAP Season 87 boys’ basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan on Wednesday.
Kallos had 25 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists for the Blue Eagles, who recovered from a two-game skid and tied their opponents at 5-6 for fourth place.
“His triple-double is an indication of the well-roundedness of his game. He’s not just a scorer, he can pass (and) rebound. He is the glue in our team, especially today, he makes sure everyone is in line with our vision and also being the captain, what more can we ask?” Blue Eagles head coach Reggie Aromin said.
Sky Jazul chipped in 22 points, three rebounds and two steals while YC Lacsamana had seven points and 20 rebounds for Ateneo, which posted its biggest lead at 45-24.
Vince Magan led the Junior Archers with 22 points, four rebounds, and four assists followed by Melvin Tailan with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Meanwhile, Jhon Canapi sizzled with 38 points, including seven triples, as the University of Santo Tomas clobbered Adamson University, 82-65.
Canapi also made six rebounds, five assists, and two steals for the Tiger Cubs, who are in solo third at 8-4.
Nick Cabanero contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists while Miguel Jubilado also produced 14 points to go with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
“I hope that Canapi maintains his performance because every game is crucial. Even if not 38 points, as long as he plays well. That’s important because I want him to be consistent, also our other players,” commented UST head coach Noli Mejos.
Prince Banate finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds, one steal, and one block for the Baby Falcons, who took their ninth loss against two wins.
Edison Jordan and Keefe Iledan scored 12 points each while Aurelio Fransman had 10. (PNA)
