LEGAZPI CITY – The Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5) has intensified road safety initiatives and enforcement operations following 3,934 vehicular accidents recorded across the Bicol Region from Dec. 1, 2025 to Feb. 25, 2026, officials reported Friday.

The incidents included cases of reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property, homicide, and physical injuries, raising serious concerns over road safety and responsible driving.

PRO-5 chief Brig. Gen. Erosito Miranda ordered regular deployment of personnel for traffic management and reminded motorists to strictly observe traffic laws and safety precautions.

As deputized agents of the Land Transportation Office, PRO-5 personnel strictly enforce traffic regulations and distribute information, education, and communication materials to promote defensive driving.

A theoretical driving course benefited 153 Philippine National Police personnel and their beneficiaries, while a road safety seminar was conducted for 358 personnel. A 16-day Executive Motorcycle Riding Course beginning Saturday aims to enhance competency and discipline among motorcycle riders assigned to patrol duties.

“Allowing minors to drive is not only dangerous but also against the law. Under RA (Republic Act) 4136, only those with valid driver’s licenses are permitted to operate vehicles. Parents and guardians who permit their children to drive are legally responsible and may be held liable if any accident occurs. Road safety starts at home, and we call on everyone to uphold the law and protect lives,” Miranda said in a statement.

He said the rising number of road accidents requires immediate and sustained action, adding that enforcement alone is not enough.

“The rising number of road accidents is a serious concern that requires immediate and sustained action. Enforcement alone is not enough. Discipline, awareness, and cooperation from every motorist are crucial. As law enforcers, we must lead by example. We call on the public to partner with us in promoting road safety because saving lives on our roads is a shared responsibility,” he added. (PNA)
