rey_andresWith a week to go before the winners of Manny Pacquiao’s Biggest Loser  is known, the boxing champion tried to break down the will of the 153 contestants  at the Temptation Night 2015 last April 11 at the Glendale Community Center by eating in front of them.

Amidst the aroma of four lechons and four roasted goat, Manny tried to lure the participants into crossing the barrier where tables are set indicating that they had enough of the 38-day long competition and were ready to settle for monetary consolation prizes in the envelopes beneath the plates at the table. By giving up after a month line crossers forfeited the opportunity to win heftier prizes of the contest initiated by the boxing champion in at least five occasions for Team Pacquiao both here in California and the Philippines.

Contestants Ezra and Olive who already lost 18 and 12 pounds, respectively, in a little over a month, must shed off at least 15 pounds of their body weigh to be in serious competition for the top prizes of $3,000, $5,000 and $10,000. An additional $2,000 is also awarded for losing 15% of the body weight.

The aromas of roasted delicacies and other mouth-watering Filipino specialties were too much to resist for at least 60 contestants who had to endure a month of some kind of deprivation, determination and discipline  to be in the contest. In addition to the weight loss, winners who will be known on April 19 are required to have memorized two Bible verses in order to win.

Manny, known for pushing many advocacies, gamely played the role of the Tempter by gamely eating before them a share of lechon to whet the appetites of the contestants and  usher them to the “quitters’ tables.”

Loser “Winners”- Contestants of Manny Pacquiao’s “Biggest Loser” Contest had it quits at the Temptation Night in Glendale last April 11 for the $10 Grand prize and settled for a few hundred as they crossed the line indicating that they had enough. Manny himself being a boxer is not stranger to losing weigh too quickly, which experts say should generally be aimed at just losing no more than 2 lbs in every 7 days. Attempts at losing more and too quickly would expose him to dangers like a messed metabolic rate, risk of accelerating diabetes, hormonal changes and hair loss and abnormal gain weight afterwards as the body’s defense to retaliate. Also weigh loss experts cite of a number of detrimental psychological and physiological changes.

Boxers lose weight fast by restricting intake of calories which experts also claim “ to cause severe damage to the body and alters metabolism, lower blood sugar levels which lead to an extreme lack of energy”.

They also restrict fluid intake and dehydrate themselves which themselves to the risk of acidosis (a condition characterized by an abnormal increase in the acidity of the blood and extra-cellular fluids) and extreme sweating by over-exercising.
