TACLOBAN CITY – Borongan City in Eastern Samar has been placed under a state of calamity due to African Swine Fever (ASF), the local government announced Wednesday.
Piggeries of about 34 hog raisers from 12 villages including Maypangdan, Tabunan, Siha, San Jose, and San Gabriel are now affected by ASF, from only two villages last March.
The city government said the City Council passed Resolution No. 55, series of 2025, on Monday to place Borongan under a state of calamity, acting on the recommendation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC), headed by Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda.
“The CDRRMC has recommended the declaration of a state of calamity in accordance with this concern to provide the necessary assistance to those who have been affected through the 30 percent quick response fund under the CDRRM fund,” the declaration stated.
The declaration also urges the city veterinary office to regularly submit reports to the Sangguniang Panglungsod on the status of the disbursement of funds and updates on the situation during the period of a state of calamity.
To recall, Borongan city government first reported ASF cases in March affecting a piggery inside the Eastern Samar State University main campus in Maypangdan village after a confirmatory test conducted on samples turned out positive.
In April, the city government implemented a pork holiday to prevent the further spread of the disease that caused the deaths of pigs. (PNA)
