TACLOBAN CITY – The Philippine Army (PA) recovered several high-powered firearms belonging to the New People’s Army (NPA) in Samar province after a captured rebel disclosed the location of the weapons in the upland village of Caranas, Motiong town.
In a statement issued Thursday, the PA’s 46th Infantry Battalion (46IB) said the soldiers unearthed one M60 machine gun, one M4 rifle, and two M16 rifles during an operation on Wednesday.
The discovery was made possible through information provided by a captured NPA member, who, according to the military, decided to cooperate after realizing the “propaganda and deception” of the communist terrorist group (CTG).
“This success showcased the bravery and dedication of our soldiers and highlights the growing trust and cooperation of those who have seen through the deception of the CTG,” Lt. Col. Marvin Inocencio, 46IB commanding officer, said.
Inocencio said the recovery of the high-powered firearms dealt a significant blow to the NPA’s operational capability, reducing their capacity to stage attacks and weakening their influence in the area.
“Every firearm recovered means one less threat to our communities and one more step toward genuine peace. The 46IB remains steadfast in its mission to secure peace and promote development in Motiong and neighboring towns,” he added.
The PA also renewed its call for remaining NPA members to surrender, lay down their arms, and return to the fold of law to begin a new life under the government’s reintegration program.
Motiong is a landlocked municipality in Samar, located about 96 kilometers north of Tacloban City, the regional capital of Eastern Visayas. (PNA)
