A motley group of Filipino Americans commemorate the 123rd Philippine Independence Day at the Signal Hill Hilltop Park in Long Beach.
The park on the summit overlooks L.A. and other counties where the majority of Filipino Americans in the U.S. reside. Bernie Targa-Ganon, president of the Pamana ng Lahi, plans to make this celebration an annual event. She says, “Late in the afternoon of June 11th (June 12 in the morning in the Philippines) makes it more meaningful. Besides, events all over are celebrated here the day after, June 12th.”
