‘Dauntless’ Hontiveros runs for senate anew, vows to push for realization of universal healthcare

MEN DEFIANCE VS. SC TRO ON CONTRACEPTIVES. Women groups led by PhilHealth Director Risa Hontiveros conducted a “Family Planning Fair” where they distributed Implanon, a contraceptive implant, to women to help them effectively plan and manage their families. Hontiveros said the activity was organized an “act of defiance” and to fill in the gaps for reproductive health service delivery created by a temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the Supreme Court on the Department of Health’s procurement and distribution of the said implant.

Despite succumbing to electoral setbacks in the past, Akbayan Chairperson Risa Hontiveros today declared her senatorial candidacy, saying that the Senate is not merely the realm of old, wealthy and influential politicians.

Three important reasons in third try
In a statement, Hontiveros said that she has three important reasons why she is gunning for a senate seat for the third straight time.

Mahalaga na may matatakbuhan tayo at hindi tayo tatakbuhan o pagsasarhan ng pinto sa oras ng gamutan,” said Hontiveros, who is also a director of the PhilHealth.

Even as great strides were made in the past three years to hold the guilty accountable, particularly those who are members of the senate, kailangan ituloy ang paglilinis,” Hontiveros said.

Break the glass ceiling”
Hontiveros said she is fully aware that this could probably be her most difficult senatorial campaign.

The challenge is daunting but we will never stop pounding at the glass ceiling. With patience and determined struggle, we will accomplish what is difficult,” Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros said she finds inspiration in the Filipino people’s “dauntlessness” and “indomitable spirit.”

In the 2010 election, Hontiveros garnered more than 9 million votes and almost made it to the senate.

In 2013, she again ran and improved her vote delivery to almost 11 million votes.

Hontiveros is so far the only progressive candidate to gain that unprecedented number of votes.
