MANILA (Mabuhay) – Justice Secretary Leila De Lima met with the accusers of Vice-President Jejomar Binay at the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday.

Present during the meeting are Makati City Vice-Mayor Ernesto Mercado, Atty. Renato Bondal, and Nicolas Enciso VI.

De Lima said the meeting is part of the steps she is taking as she mulls ordering the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the Vice President. This is in light of allegations by Mercado’s group that Binay and his family, along with their alleged cohorts, pocketed huge sums of money from rigged Makati City projects.

De Lima has repeatedly said the DOJ and NBI cannot turn a blind eye nor a deaf ear on allegations as grave as the ones hurled at the Binays. Binay’s camp earlier said De Lima is exercising “selective justice” for allegedly only running after members of the opposition while sparing President Aquino’s allies.

While De Lima acknowledged that Binay may only be removed from office via impeachment, she has repeatedly stressed that Binay is not immune from investigation.

The meeting lasted for less than an hour; while a video and photo opportunity was granted to media men after the meeting.

Mercado, Bondal, and Enciso, all of whom are under the DOJ Witness Protection Program, were barred from issuing statements.(MNS)
