MANILA, Sept 22 (Mabuhay) -– The daughter of slain environmentalist Gerry Ortega on Tuesday renewed her family’s call for Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to act on their petition for review of his father’s slay case.

Mika Ortega said de Lima should finally act on the petition for review so that the case can move on and not be trapped in a web of technicalities.

The petition for review is seeking the reversal of the resolution issued by the first panel of prosecutors junking the murder charges against former Palawan governor Joel Reyes and his brother, former Coron mayor Mario Reyes, who were both arrested in Thailand after years in hiding.

Mika said it behooves de Lima to resolve the petition before she steps down as Justice secretary in preparation for her possible bid for a Senate seat.

”Maglilimang taon na. Ang tagal na naming isinumite itong petition na ito sa kanyang office, hindi pa rin nasasagot,” Mika said.

”Bago po siya umalis – this happened well within her term – sana po sagutin na niya.”

When the panel junked the murder charges against the Reyes brothers, de Lima formed a second panel, which eventually found probable cause against the two.

However, the Court of Appeals nullified the second panel’s and later ordered de Lima to review the findings of the first panel.

De Lima brought the matter to the Supreme Court but the high court has yet to resolve this.(MNS)
