MANILA – The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) on Wednesday reminded the public to adopt preventive measures against dengue through the “4S Kontra Dengue” strategy, as the rainy season begins.

In a media release, the DOH reported a total of 952 dengue cases in the region from Jan. 1 to May 24, 2025, translating to a 112-percent increase in cases compared to the same period last year.

The “4S” strategy includes the following key actions: “search” and destroy mosquito breeding grounds by eliminating stagnant water and removing containers that hold water, “self-protection” measures such as using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, “seek” early consultation with a doctor or healthcare worker if you experience symptoms, and “support” fogging or spraying in local hotspots or outbreak areas where an increase in cases has been reported.

The DOH-5 added that it continues to collaborate with partners and local government units to strengthen the implementation of the National Dengue Control Program.

In a separate interview, Garnet Bercasio, a mother from Bacacay, Albay, shared that she conducts daily clean-ups in her backyard to ensure the safety of her family.

“I believe that prevention is better than going to the hospital and feeling regret. We just need to maintain discipline in our household to help stop the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes,” she said.

Isaac, a minor who suffered from dengue last year, said he is now more cautious about going to other places.

He added that he does not want to contract dengue again, as it left him feeling scared. (PNA)
