MANILA (Mabuhay) — The Department of Labor and Employment on Wednesday issued pay rules in Metro Manila during Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines next week.

DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz noted Jan. 15, 16 and 19 are special non-working days in Metro Manila as decreed by Proclamation 936.

In a news release posted on the DOLE website, Baldoz reminded private sector employers in Metro Manila to “observe the proper pay rules for the benefit of their workers.”

Under the rules:

  • If the employee did not work, the “no work, no pay” principle shall apply, unless there is a favorable company practice or collective bargaining agreement granting payment on a special day.
  • If the employee worked, he or she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his or her daily rate on the first eight hours of work.
  • If the employee worked more than eight hours (overtime work), he or she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his or her hourly rate on the day.
  • If the employee worked during a special day that also falls on his or her rest day, he or she shall be paid an additional 50 percent of his or her daily rate on the first eight hours of work.
  • If the employee worked in excess of eight hours (overtime work) during a special day that also falls on his or her rest day, he or she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his or her hourly rate on that day.

Pope Francis is due to visit the Philippines Jan. 15 to 19. He will take part in events in Manila and Leyte.  (MNS)
