MANILA – Two Philippine embassies warned Filipinos abroad to be cautious of fraudulent email users posing as diplomats and government officials.
In an advisory on Wednesday, the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa reminded the public that all Philippine foreign service posts in Canada do not transmit legal documents via email.
“The public is advised to beware of unscrupulous individuals who use fake e-mail accounts and pose as personnel of the Philippine Embassy or the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs for fraudulent transactions, including service of legal process,” it said.
“The service of legal processes on Filipino citizens overseas is completed through personal service or registered mail in connection with cases pending in the courts of the Philippines.”
A similar reminder was issued by the Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC after receiving reports of messages and accounts falsely claiming to be Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez.
It noted that the embassy and the envoy “do not solicit money, personal/financial information, or private communications through unofficial or personal accounts.”
Legitimate engagements, it said, are coordinated solely by Embassy offices through official addresses and channels. (PNA)
