After its critical success at the Busan International Film festival, the Hawaii International Film Festival (Audience Award winner), and the Dubai International Film festival, highly acclaimed Filipino documentary HARANA will participate at the forthcoming Pacific Arts Movement Spring Showcase, formerly called the San Diego Asian Film Festival from 18 to 25 April 2013.  Screening dates for “HARANA” is on Saturday, 20 April 2013 at 1:00pm and Wednesday, 24 April 2013 at 4:45pm.

Once an important custom of Philippine culture, harana was a traditional form of courtship wherein men serenaded women by singing underneath their window at night.  It had a set of protocols, a code of conduct and most importantly, a specific style of music.  The harana tradition, along with its music, has been rapidly vanishing in its home country where it was once an important part of the social fabric.

Produced by Fides Enriquez and directed by Benito Bautista, the HARANA documentary follows world music guitarist Florante Aguilar as he travels throughout remote parts of the Philippine countryside in search for what remains of this musical tradition and its practitioners.  During his journey, Florante meets Felipe Alonzo, Celestino Aniel and Romeo Bergunio, three men living simple lives in obscurity, but who exemplify the definition of a true harana master.  Astounded by their golden voices, Florante plucks them from their humble surroundings to perform and record these old songs.  Word quickly spread of these leathery-faced men whose style of sincere and expressive singing touch the heart, culminating in a series of triumphant live performances.
