MANILA – Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents intercepted a 35-year-old Filipino at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City while attempting to travel to Cambodia under suspicious circumstances.
Mary Jane Hizon, chief of BI’s Immigration Protection and Border Enforcement Section, said the man initially claimed he was flying to Hanoi, Vietnam, on a Cebu Pacific flight.
“The traveler claimed that his trip was on-the-spot or spontaneous. However, his inconsistent responses during primary questioning raised suspicions, prompting his referral for secondary inspection,” Hizon said in a news release Sunday.
Upon further inspection, he admitted he was heading to Cambodia through Facebook recruitment.
The man disclosed he was promised a job at a business process outsourcing (BPO) company, with instructions sent through messaging application Telegram.
Syndicates often use BPOs as fronts for scams, including online fraud and catfishing operations, the BI said.
Meanwhile, BI agents in Nueva Ecija arrested 67-year-old American Michael Lewis Ginsberg, wanted in the United States for sexual assault.
He is awaiting deportation for overstaying. (PNA)
