Leo Abaya is a visual artist whose initial involvement in the arts was in film, first as short filmmaker at the formerly UP Film Center, then as a prize-winning production designer of Chito Roño’s ”Itanong Mo Sa Buwan” and “Bakit Kay Tagal Ng Sandali?”, Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s “Jose Rizal” and “Muro-ami” and Jeffrey Jeturian’s “Kubrador”, among others. In 2001 he started to design sets for Dulaang UP, PETA and Tanghalang Pilipino. Leo belongs to the first batch of Ricky Lee’s Scriptwriting Workshop, which included Armando Lao, Jeffrey Jeturian and Boots Agbayani Pastor. He finished his MA Fine Art at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton in the UK, and his second undergraduate degree, BFA (mcl) at the UP College of Fine Arts, Diliman where he is currently teaching. INSTANT MOMMY is his debut as screenwriter and director.
