MANILA (Mabuhay) – Is Vice President Jejomar Binay still a friend of the Aquino administration?

Secretary to the Cabinet Jose Rene Almendras said Binay fills an important role in government as head of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council.

“As far as I am concerned, the portfolio of the vice president is moving well,” he said.

“Is he a friend? Personally, yes he is. I have known him before I joined the government. Two, his role in the Cabinet is important. Housing is a major driver…” he added.

He also apologized for not giving a political statement, saying he is not a politician.

Binay has been critical of some of the country’s problems including rampant criminality, worsening railway services and the looming energy crisis.

President Aquino earlier said he did not offer to help Binay who is facing investigation over the alleged overpricing in the construction of the Makati City hall parking building and other anomalies.

Speaking at a forum with the FOCAP, Aquino denied a statement reportedly made by Binay’s spokespersons that Aquino asked how he could help Binay when they met at Bahay Pangarap.

Well, baka naman the reverse is actually true. The Vice President was saying… he was asking advice, for instance, on what to do. So I didn’t offer to help. He asked for advice on… how to handle the situation, amongst other things,” he said.

Aquino said it was also Binay who “volunteered the information” on how his family is coping with the investigations. (MNS)
