MANILA (Mabuhay) — An administration ally on Tuesday said he is mulling filing an impeachment case against Vice President Jejomar Binay based on the revelations made by former Makati City Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado in the Senate probe on the alleged overpriced construction of the Makati City Hall Building II.

“Mayroon na akong nakikitang dahilan [para mag-file ng impeachment case],” Rep. Edgar Erice told reporters.

Mercado’s claim that Binay was able to raise more than P1 billion for his vice presidential campaign in 2010 from the kickbacks he allegedly received from projects in the city could constitute an impeachable offense, Erice said.

The Liberal Party stalwart said he may cite betrayal of public trust as the ground of the impeachment complaint he considers filing.

Binay has denied he and his family benefitted from the alleged overpricing of the Makati building.

Erice said he will wait for the Senate Blue Ribbon committee to release its report on the probe before working on filing the impeachment complaint against the Vice President. (MNS)
