MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has apprehended a total of 262 trucks for various safety violations following the fatal Katipunan flyover accident in December last year.

In a statement on Wednesday, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said the LTO stepped up its operations against unsafe trucks through the enhanced visibility of enforcers in Metro Manila and other parts of the country, particularly regular routes of delivery trucks.

These LTO enforcers are deployed during the evening and early morning when the truck ban is lifted in urban areas.

“We have already issued show cause orders (SCOs) for almost half of them and we will issue more SCOs to cover the rest of those apprehended,” Mendoza said.

“The SCOs include both the driver and registered owner of these delinquent trucks.”

Most of the violations of apprehended trucks were for overloading and using worn-out tires.

“Sa mga driver at may-ari ng mga pasaway na truck na ito, huwag na ninyong hintayin na mahuli dahil tiyak na patong-patong na problema ang kakaharapin ninyo (To the drivers and owners of these trucks, don’t wait until you’re caught because you’ll just face bigger problems),” Mendoza said.

In December, a truck plying Katipunan flyover in Quezon City rammed several vehicles, killing four people and injuring 24 others.

The driver claimed his truck’s brakes malfunctioned, causing the accident. (PNA)
