MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Friday began its investigation into a viral video showing a driver of a black Ford Ranger who fell asleep on the wheel and caused damage to property in Metro Manila.

In a statement, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said the video, posted in a Facebook page named Yamato Kenji, is being investigated to check whether the incident was caused by a medical condition or otherwise.

“While it was stated in the video that the driver fell asleep, we want to know what really happened,” Mendoza said.

In the video, the pick-up truck was seen slowly travelling along the road while motorists were trying to wake up the driver.

In a show cause order issued by the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division, the registered owner of the vehicle bearing plate no. NHD 3814 was summoned to appear before the LTO to explain who the driver was, and to clarify reports that the driver was drunk.

Possible violations of the driver include reckless driving, driving under the influence of liquor, and for being an unauthorized person to operate a motor vehicle.

The vehicle has since been temporarily placed on alarm to prevent all transactions with the LTO while the investigation is ongoing. (PNA)
