MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Tuesday summoned the owner and driver of a dump truck that rammed at least 16 concrete barriers of the EDSA Busway in Quezon City.

The truck was reportedly bound for Taguig to deliver sand from Porac, Pampanga when the incident occurred.

The driver confessed that he fell asleep while driving.

In a statement, LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident near EDSA-Santolan is ongoing.

Gusto nating malaman kung bakit nagresulta sa ganitong klaseng aksidente dahil hindi normal ang ganitong klaseng aksidente kung saan aararuhin mo yung mga concrete barriers (We want to find out what happened because it’s not normal for someone to have rammed several concrete barriers),” Mendoza said.

A show cause order (SCO) was issued by the LTO-Intelligence and Investigation Division to the registered owner of the dump truck, ordering both the owner and the driver to appear before the LTO Central Office in Quezon City on March 31.

The registered owner was asked to explain why she should not be penalized for hiring a reckless driver.

On the other hand, the driver was asked to explain why he should not be punished for reckless driving and for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.

“Failure to appear and submit written comment/explanation as required shall be construed by this office as a waiver of your right to be heard, and the case shall be decided based on the evidence at hand,” the SCO read.

The license of the driver was immediately preventively suspended for 90 days. (PNA)
