MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Monday summoned the owners of a jeepney and a dump truck involved in a head-on collision that injured at least nine people in Antipolo City last Saturday.
In a statement, LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, ordered the owner of the jeepney with license plate TXF 222 and the Howo dump truck with plate NEJ 4224 to bring with them the drivers of the vehicles to a hearing with the LTO.
“We want to know the circumstances that led to the incident, particularly on why the passenger jeepney overshot the lane that led to this accident,” Mendoza said.
The collision was filmed on the dump truck’s dashcam and went viral on social media.
In the video, the jeepney was proceeding in the opposite lane when it veered into the lane of the dump truck, resulting in a head-on collision between the two vehicles.
The dump truck also hit a tricycle when it swerved in an attempt to avoid the collision.
The drivers are facing charges of Reckless Driving (Section 48 of Republic Act No. 4136) and Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle (Sec. 27 of RA No. 4136).
In the show cause orders (SCO) issued to both vehicle owners, LTO-Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) head Renante Melitante ordered them to explain in notarized writing why they should not be held liable for employing reckless drivers.
“Failure to appear and submit your written answer will compel this Office to resolve the matter based on the available evidence on record,” the SCO read. (PNA)
