MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has summoned the owner of a taxicab that caught fire along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Barangay Santo Cristo, Quezon City on Wednesday.

LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, said a show cause order was issued to both the registered owner and driver of the taxi with plate number ABE 2064 to discuss the vehicle’s roadworthiness as a possible cause of the fire.

“This case will now be investigated, and we will find out if that vehicle is being maintained regularly, which is a must for motor vehicles being used for public transportation,” Mendoza said in a statement.

Both the owner and driver were asked to appear before the LTO Central Office on Jan. 27 along with their notarized affidavit explaining the incident.

Their affidavit should show why they should not be administratively held liable for failing to ensure the taxicab’s roadworthiness before its operation.

“The vehicle was being used to transport passengers. And what happened here is very dangerous since it put the life and limb of not only the driver but, more importantly, the passengers,” Mendoza said. (PNA)
