BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook Siargao Island at 2:42 a.m. on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
Located 35 km. off the coast of General Luna in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, the tectonic earthquake had a depth of 58 km.
Intensity IV was recorded in General Luna, Del Carmen, San Isidro, Dapa, and Claver in Surigao del Norte, and Cortes in Surigao del Sur; and Intensity I in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
Instrumental intensities were also reported by Phivolcs, including Intensity III in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur; Intensity II in Mambajao, Camiguin; City of Cebu, Cebu; Dulag, Leyte; Gingoog City Misamis Oriental; and Sogod, Southern Leyte; and Intensity I in Malaybalay, Bukidnon; Carcar, Cebu; Nabunturan, Davao del Oro; Palo, Leyte; and Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte.
Aftershocks are expected in the affected areas, the Phivolcs said as local government units are assessing the possible damages caused by the earthquake. (PNA)
