MANILA – A Japanese national allegedly linked to the notorious “Luffy” gang was arrested in an operation in Laguna province, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported Tuesday.
Sasaki Takashi, 43, was arrested Monday in Savana Village, San Pablo City by BI agents in coordination with the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group and the local police, according to a news release.
“Takashi is a fugitive from justice wanted by the Japanese government for theft and fraud, targeting vulnerable individuals. His presence in the Philippines endangers our communities and undermines our commitment to maintaining security and order,” Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said.
The Tokyo Summary Court issued a warrant of arrest against the suspect in January 2023 for violations of Japan’s Penal Code.
Reports from Japanese authorities said Takashi and his accomplices stole automated teller machine cards and bank information from elderly victims by posing as law enforcement or finance officials conducting investigations.
“This arrest underscores the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in protecting the public from transnational crimes. We will continue to strengthen our partnerships with both local and international agencies to ensure that the Philippines does not become a haven for fugitives,” Viado said.
Investigations also revealed that Takashi is a member of the notorious Japanese criminal syndicate reportedly operating telecom fraud and extortion schemes in the Philippines.
The suspect will be transferred to the BI warden facility in Taguig City until his deportation. (PNA)
