MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Saturday said there is no word yet on whether President Benigno Aquino III will act on a recommendation to grant executive clemency to elderly inmates.
“Wala pa tayong update diyan,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said on government-run dzRB radio.
Last Dec. 20, presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the Palace is studying a recommendation to grant executive clemency to elderly inmates.
At the time, Lacierda said the office of the Chief Presidential Legal Counsel is studying the matter and will come out with its recommendations.
Earlier reports said Public Attorney’s Office head Persida Acosta asked President Aquino to grant pardon to elderly and ill inmates.
She was quoted in the report as saying most of the convicts are seriously ill, and that they are hoping Aquino will consider.
But Lacierda declined to comment further, saying he does not want to give “false hope.” (MNS)
