MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has called on the public to increase vigilance to prevent drowning incidents during the summer season and holidays.
At a forum hosted by the Philippine Information Agency Ilocos Region on Friday, PCG Northern Luzon Special Operations Group commanding officer Lt. Junior Juanito Melad stressed that safety begins with self-awareness.
He advised the public to assess water conditions, such as current strength, wave height, and seabed terrain, before swimming.
“Number one, we should know how to swim. Number two, never swim alone. Third, look after the children. Fourth, assess areas for possible risks. Fifth, never swim when under the influence of alcohol or substances,” Melad said in Filipino.
PCG Northwestern Luzon nursing service Ensign Alford John Guttierez warned against untrained rescue attempts, as they could lead to more casualties.
“Do not attempt to rescue a drowning person if you do not know how to swim. Do not attempt to help without proper training and rescue equipment,” Guttierez said, adding that it is better to seek help immediately from lifeguards or other authorities with proper training and equipment.
PCG La Union deputy station commander Ensign Mart Pril Deserva said they are conducting regular patrols and Baywatch operations with local government units (LGUs).
The PCG also offers training and seminars to LGUs.
In 2024, there were 60 reported drowning incidents, up from 53 in 2023, partly due to weather disturbances. (PNA)
