MANILA (Mabuhay) — A day after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he will run for president in the coming 2016 elections, his political party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), still hopes that he will seek the highest elective post next year.
“We assume kasi that he will file, so up to the last minute, we will hope,” Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III, PDP-Laban president, said in a text message to reporters.
Pimentel said they will only find a presidential candidate to support once there is really no chance for Duterte to file a certificate of candidacy.
“If the period ends without Duterte filing a certificate of candidacy for president, then the party will start its own soul searching for the presidential candidate it will support,” he said.
The filing of COCs started on October 12 and will end on October 16.
During a press briefing on Monday, Duterte said he will not seek the presidency next year.
He said a “major factor” in his decision not to run for president was his daughter, former Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, who he said is not in favor of him joining the 2016 presidential race.
Duterte should his daughter not seek the mayoralty post next year, then he will seek re-election. But if his daugther decides to run for mayor, then he will retire in 2016.
Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano and Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. have yet to comment on the mayor’s decision.
Both Cayetano and Marcos earlier met with Duterte regarding the 2016 elections. (MNS)
