MANILA – Australian coach Mark Torcaso believes that the Philippines has a chance against South Korea.
Torcaso, the head coach of the Filipinas, made the remark before the Korean Taeguk Ladies won over the Iranians, 3-0, in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup at the Cbus Super Stadium in Queensland, Australia on Monday.
“The one thing that this team’s got is their fight and determination, and they don’t stop. And we saw this in the last World Cup,” Torcaso said, citing the Filipinas making it to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
While Australia and South Korea lead their bracket, the Filipinas are set to face the Taeguk Ladies on Thursday.
The Filipinas are hoping to bounce back from their 0-1 loss to the Australian Matildas.
Those who scored for South Korea were Choe Yu-ri (37th minute), Kim Hye-ri (59th), and Ko Yoo-jin (75th).
Taeguk Ladies coach Shin Sang-woo said his squad won’t be as nervous against the Philippines.
“I’d like to thank all my players as we achieved victory, but we need to be more clinical, and I am a bit disappointed today. Our players were quite nervous (in the opening stages), because this was our first match,” Shin said.
South Korea showed its high level of experience and technical skill by maintaining a 79 percent possession. (PNA)
