MANILA, Aug 5 (Mabuhay)– The daily count of new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the country breached the 7,000-mark anew on Wednesday after the health department reported 7,342 new infections.

The Department of Health said the new infections brought the country’s total case count to 1,619,824.

Active cases in the country also rose to 63,171, of which 94.1% are mild, 1.3% are asymptomatic, 2% are severe, and 1.2% are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, total recoveries increased to 1,528,422 after 7,285 more patients defeated the respiratory illness.

The death toll climbed to 28,231 with 90 new fatalities.

The DOH said 59 duplicates were removed from the total case count, while 23 cases previously tagged as recoveries have been validated to be active cases.

Fifty-one cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were also reclassified as deaths after final validation.

The DOH said one laboratory was not operational on August 2, while six laboratories were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System.

Further, data from the DOH also showed that 61% of the country’s intensive care unit beds are utilized, while 41% of the mechanical ventilators are also in use.

In Metro Manila, 59% of the ICU beds are in use, while 42% of the ventilators are utilized. (MNS)
