MANILA – Aftershocks from the Sept. 30, 2025 magnitude 6.9 offshore Northern Cebu earthquake have reached 20,725 as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, and the public is urged to be vigilant.

Data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) showed aftershocks had magnitudes ranging from 1 to 5.8.

At least 3,583 of the aftershocks were plotted or located, and 99 were felt.

“It is normal that aftershocks may last for months to years, especially if the main shock is quite strong,” Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol told the Philippine News Agency in an interview.

The Bogo Bay Fault generated the magnitude 6.9 quake.

On Monday, Phivolcs reported a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in Cebu, and later downgraded this to magnitude 5.1.

Bacolcol confirmed that this earthquake, with its epicenter located 10 km. southeast of Bogo City, is still part of the sequence of aftershocks.

“Aftershocks were recorded daily, but most of these quakes were small and not felt,” he added.

With the continuous activity, Bacolcol highlighted the need for vigilance.

“Expect occasional shaking. If there is a strong shaking, do the duck, cover and hold,” he said. (PNA)
