MANILA – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday assured there was no ashfall or indication of magma movement following Kanlaon Volcano’s brief ash emission on Sunday.

The 18-minute activity produced a 500-meter-high plume but did not cause ashfall in nearby areas, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said during the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing.

The volcano was still under Alert Level 2 (moderate level of unrest), which means phreatic or steam-driven eruptions are possible.

Bacolcol reminded the public to refrain from entering the four-kilometer permanent danger zone of the volcano.

“Stay calm, but remain vigilant,” he said.

Volcano information should only be sourced from Phivolcs and local government units, Bacolcol said. (PNA)
