MANILA – The Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 (Central Visayas) on Friday said cybercrime charges have been filed against two individuals for peddling fake news through their social media accounts.

PRO 7 chief Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said the filing of complaints stemmed from a video circulating on social media during the recent grand procession of Sinulog Festival and prayer protest rally.

“Ating mga cyber investigators ay napag-alaman natin very tedious at very circuitous ang imbestigasyon na ginawa natin sapagkat online kasi ito (Our cyber investigators found that the investigation we conducted was very tedious and very circuitous because it was online),” he said in a statement.

Maranan said they have coordinated with telecommunication companies and internet providers to track the digital footprint of the false information peddlers.

He reminded the public that the dissemination of false information on social media is a serious offense that undermines public trust and safety.

Maranan also encouraged everyone to be vigilant and responsible in their online interactions. (PNA)
