CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – Government troops foiled a renewed attempt by communist insurgents to reestablish its presence in Laguna in an encounter on Thursday.

Brig. Gen. Ronald Jess S. Alcudia, commander of the Philippine Army’s 202nd Infantry Brigade (202IBgde), said in a message Friday that soldiers clashed with members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Famy town, resulting in the death of a female rebel and the recovery of her firearm.

The remaining NPA members fled, prompting ongoing pursuit operations in the area.

Alcudia stated that the operation stemmed from reports by concerned residents about the group’s extortion activities, which had resurfaced in the municipality.

Troops from the 202IBgde, led by the 80th Infantry Battalion and supported by other combat units, intercepted the rebels, effectively thwarting their plans to regain influence.

Alcudia underscored the partnership between the PA and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in addressing the threat posed by the NPA. He highlighted their commitment to preventing the group from exploiting local communities, particularly amid preparations for the upcoming elections.

“The recent encounter in Famy should not be perceived as a sign of instability,” he assured. “Instead, it reflects the community’s united effort to maintain Stable Internal Peace and Security (SIPS).”

Alcudia said under the SIPS, both the PNP and the Army, along with the people in the communities play an active role in the fight against insurgency.

He commended the vigilance of local residents, whose timely reporting of the NPA’s activities proved instrumental in the operation’s success.

Authorities continue to monitor and pursue remaining NPA elements to ensure the safety and security of the municipality. (PNA)
