MANILA – Senate Majority Leader Francis “Tol” Tolentino on Monday urged authorities to strictly enforce the 60-kilometer-per-hour (kph) speed limit on major thoroughfares following a recent deadly crash along Commonwealth Ave. in Quezon City.
Tolentino introduced the 60 kph speed limit in 2011 while serving as chair of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA). The rule has since been expanded to cover other major roads across the capital region.
“Commonwealth has been called the ‘killer highway’ due to the high number of accidents and fatalities there. To address this, we imposed the 60 kph speed limit during my term as MMDA chairman,” Tolentino said in a news release.
A speeding passenger jeepney lost control and collided with two other vehicles, killing two passengers and injuring 16 others on Sunday along Commonwealth Ave.
“The 60 kph speed limit remains relevant today as it did when we first introduced it 14 years ago. Rules exist to ensure traffic order and public safety,” Tolentino said.
He emphasized it is the responsibility of drivers and motorists to observe discipline and road courtesy.
Over the weekend, Tolentino launched a smart traffic light signaling system in Kalibo, Aklan—one of several projects he has supported in cities including Dumaguete, Naga, GMA in Cavite, San Pablo, Calamba, and Roxas City. (PNA)
