MANILA – A shooting incident between the groups of a mayoral candidate and a municipal councilor left one person dead and another wounded in Tayum, Abra on Monday.

In a phone interview with reporters at Camp Crame on Tuesday, Abra Police Provincial Office Director, Col. Froiland Lopez, identified the fatality as Jay-ar Tanura and the wounded as Jordan Calaustro Barcena.

He said both Tanura and Barcena were on board a convoy of mayoral candidate Kathlia Cariño Alcantara along with Barangay Budac chairman Ryan Luna and a certain Raffy Tejero who were campaigning in Sitio Agdamay in Barangay Budac, Tayum.

Witnesses said Luna and Tejero fired the first shots at the convoy of municipal councilor Walter Tugadi, prompting a concerned citizen to inform the Tayum municipal police station about the shooting incident.

“Ang mga tauhan natin dito ay naka-alerto (Our personnel are always on alert) so we are expecting that to happen knowing election na naman, pag election ng Abra (every election in Abra),” Lopez said.

He said charges for homicide and violation of the election gun ban would be filed against those involved in the shooting, which he considered “election-related.” (PNA)
