CEBU CITY – Residents in two Cebu southern towns were stunned after a deluge of herrings (tamban or tuloy) washed ashore on three separate occasions.

In the diving town of Moalboal, residents harvested tons of herrings as they beached twice on Thursday and on Sunday.

Another incident occurred Sunday in Argao town.

Jonalyn Jumabis, a radio reporter and a native of Moalboal, said they first experienced a bounty of fish along the shoreline of Panagsama in the coastal village of Basdiot on Thursday.

Another batch of herrings washed ashore on the same spot for the second time on Sunday, Jumabis said.

“Townsfolk from neighboring towns of Dumanjug and Alcantara flocked the Panagsama Beach to harvest tuloy,” she said.

Some harvested as many as 40 kilos and sold them, she added. Others had their fish dried.

On Monday, hundreds from Moalboal, Dumanjug, and Alcantara waited until noon but went home empty-handed.

In Argao, tons of fish, including sardines (mangsi or tuloy), were harvested in Barangay Looc in Lawis Point, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, a juvenile whale shark showed up along the coastline of Punta Engano village in Lapu-Lapu City on Saturday. A netizen recorded a video of the baby whale shark swimming near the surface.

Garry Lao, city tourism officer of Lapu-Lapu, urged the public to let sea creatures where they are.

He said the city government is monitoring whale sharks, sea turtles and sardines spotted in different areas in the tourism destination. (PNA)
