MANILA – University of Santo Tomas displayed its awesome form to take the lead in the UAAP Season 87 blitz chess tournament at the Adamson Gym last Sunday.

UST, coming off a title victory in the men’s rapid event, swept the single-round robin eliminations to gain 10 points and the No. 1 seed in the semifinals where it will face the University of the Philippines.

Jan Clifford Labog remained unbeaten in five matches to garner 16.5 points.

No. 2 seed Far Eastern University will meet No. 3 seed De La Salle University.

In the women’s division, Precious Yecla scored 12.5 points as UST stayed perfect after five rounds.

Meanwhile, FEU-Diliman scored eight points after five rounds to reach the girls final.

Woman FIDE Master April Joy Claros scored 10 points after winning all her matches as FEU-D forged a title duel with National University-Nazareth School.

FEU-D also advanced to the boy’s final against UST. Both teams finished with seven match points each. 

Rounds 6 and 7 of the women’s division are set for April 3, while the semifinals and finals across all divisions will be on April 6. (PNA)
