MANILA – University of Santo Tomas moved closer to winning its 17th men’s crown after demolishing University of the Philippines, 3-0, Wednesday in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 88 best-of-three Finals at the Colegio San Agustin indoor hard courts in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.
Game 2 is set at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday at the same Bulacan venue.
Ericjay Tangub bounced back from a first-set loss to prevail over Loucas Fernandez, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.
“This first win of ours, this is what will give us confidence for the second game. We really need to take it, so in the next match, we’re not that tight and pressured. That’s also our advantage, for being in four Finals appearances,” Tangub said.
“Coach Johnny (Arcilla) said to just enjoy it because I was down for the first set. I lost, then the second set, we were close. So my mindset was, if it’s his, it’s really his. Then if it’s mine, it’s mine so I’ll try my best to fight,” he added.
Evan Bacalso outplayed Miguel Iglupas, 6-4, 7-6(3), while Christopher Sonsona survived Lance Fernandez, 6-7 (3), 7-6(4), 6-1. (PNA)
