MANILA (Mabuhay) – Are you ready for a Poe-Francis tandem in 2016?
Sen. Grace Poe said there are rumors of a Grace Poe-Francis Escudero tandem that will be fielded in the 2016 presidential election.
Poe said the latest Pulse Asia survey, which showed her just behind Vice-President Jejomar Binay as the most preferred presidential candidate, is just a snapshot of the voters’ preferences at present.
“It should not be enough to encourage you or to make you decide to run or not to run,” she said.
What is important, she said, is the survey also had a portion that was not shown to the public about her getting high approval ratings from the people. “That is most gratifying and makes my job worthwhile,” she said.
Poe, who topped the senatorial race in 2010, said candidates who are not doing well in the surveys should not be discouraged. She said her own senatorial bid saw her jump from 28th place in the pre-election surveys to number 5 and then down to number 11 right after she said she would run.
The senator said it is difficult to even consider that the more seasoned Escudero would run for a lower position alongside her.
“I keep telling Senator Chiz he is very seasoned. He really knows. He helps me and I think he is qualified. In my mind it is hard to even think he will be my vice. Maybe he should be president,” she said.
Poe admitted that she has not made up her mind on running for higher office next year.
“People might find it hard to believe but I am not really planning that strategy yet because it will really affect the quality of your work if your intention is because I will run. You might make certain compromises that might not be good also for your sworn mandate.”
She said that while things can change, being president is a difficult position “seeing what [President Aquino] is going through right now.”
One factor that is shaping her decision, she said, is the 2004 presidential campaign of her father, the late Action King Fernando Poe Jr.
The actor ran for president in 2004 but lost to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in an election that was allegedly marred by widespread cheating.
Poe said her favorite line comes from Pope Francis, when he was asked when he wanted to be pope. The pope replied: “I never wanted to be pope because the person who wants to be pope does not love himself.”
“Jesus does not like people who don’t love themselves. When you think about that position, why would I want to do that? It’s difficult except when you think about what you can do for the people. That’s what can spell the difference,” she added. (MNS)
