MANILA – The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Thursday reminded tourists to respect locals and observe proper conduct when visiting Philippine destinations.

The statement comes following reports of an assault by a group of foreign tourists on the owners of a local café in Siargao on May 11.

The DOT did not make a specific mention of the incident but reminded local and foreign tourists alike to not ask for any special treatment when it comes to the law.

“We, Filipinos, are known for our warmth. But hospitality is not an invitation to disrespect our people, our culture, or our laws. Every tourist is welcome in the Philippines, so long as they come with respect,” it said.

“When it comes to the law, no one gets special treatment. Local or foreign, the standard is the same. We stand in defense of Siargao’s tourism, but more than that, we stand in defense of Filipino dignity and welfare,” it added.

The local government of General Luna, Siargao on May 12 confirmed reports that two unidentified individuals attacked and mauled the owners of the said island café, and that authorities are currently conducting an investigation.

The DOT, meanwhile, reminded the public to refrain from making sweeping generalization against an entire race or nationality as circulating reports on social media identified the foreigners as Israeli nationals, who allegedly reacted to the establishment’s open display of support for Palestine.

“We call on the public to not paint an entire race or nationality with the same brush. The actions of a few do not speak for the many,” it said. (PNA)
