ILOILO CITY – A former barangay tanod (village watchman) and his wife were nabbed by authorities during a drug bust operation launched by authorities in Barangay San Juan, Molo District this city on Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities identified the suspect as alias Alter, 53, a high-value suspect, and alias Maria, 52, both residents of the barangay.
The operation, led by the Iloilo City Police Station 4, seized approximately 150 grams of suspected shabu, with an estimated street value of PHP1.02 million.
Iloilo City Police Director, Col. Wilbert Parilla, in a statement on Thursday, said the “incident reflects a serious breakdown of responsibility within the family and the community.”
“This case is deeply concerning because parents are expected to be role models and pillars of guidance in the home. Instead of setting a good example, they became involved in illegal activities that harm not only their family but the entire community,” he said.
San Juan Punong Barangay Jose Martin Maloto, in a media interview, said the suspect sought permission to resign as a barangay tanod on April 25.
Maloto added the suspect was not on the barangay’s list of drug personalities but had a stabbing case in 2018, which was dismissed.
The suspects are facing charges for violating Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (PNA)
