MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Monday summoned the registered owner and driver of a Toyota Hilux that went viral on social media over its bright rear-facing auxiliary lamps that blind other motorists.
In a statement, LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao, said the installation of vehicle accessories should never endanger the public.
“Ang kaligtasan ng publiko ay hindi dapat isinasakripisyo para lamang sa porma o personal na kagustuhan (Public safety should not be sacrificed for style or personal preference),” Lacanilao said.
Under the show cause order (SCO) issued to both the owner and driver, they are facing administrative charges of Reckless Driving, Motor Vehicle Operating with Unauthorized Accessory, and Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle.
Both individuals were summoned to appear before the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division at the LTO Central Office on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and explain why they should not be liable for these violations.
To date, the license of the driver has been put on a 90-day preventive suspension while the Toyota Hilux has been placed on alarm.
“Muli namang ipinaalalahanan ng LTO ang publiko na tiyaking sumusunod sa umiiral na batas at regulasyon ang anumang modifications o accessories na ikinakabit sa kanilang mga sasakyan (The LTO once again reminds the public that any modifications or accessories on their vehicle should follow laws and regulations),” he said.
In a viral video, the Toyota Hilux was seen traveling on the road at night with its bright auxiliary lights on, impairing the vision of those behind it. (PNA)
