MANILA – The city government of Manila advised the public to wear face masks when going out due to a “very unhealthy” air quality in the area.
In an advisory issued Monday, the Manila Public Information Office urged vulnerable groups—particularly children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory illnesses—to remain indoors.
Based on a report from the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (DRRMD), air quality sensors at four monitored sites recorded “very unhealthy” levels in the city and nearby areas as of 12 a.m. Monday.
The ongoing fire at the Navotas Landfill may still be affecting air quality in the city and nearby areas, along with the wind direction, the advisory added.
“The public is strictly advised, especially around Puregold Tayuman, to avoid going out if not necessary and wear a face mask as protection,” it said.
It also asked the public to stay alert and monitor for upcoming air quality updates.
For emergencies, they may call Manila City DRRM Department at the following numbers: (02) 8463-3295, 0950-700-3710 and 0932-662-2322. (PNA)
