MANILA – The Philippine Air Force (PAF) deployed an S-70i Black Hawk to help extinguish a spreading grass and forest fire in Homonhon Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar over the weekend.
The deployment of the aircraft is part of firefighting operations within the Tactical Operations Group 8 area of responsibility under the Tactical Operations Wing Central.
“Operating in challenging terrain beyond the reach of ground responders, the Black Hawk was equipped with a helibucket system to deliver precision water drops over fire-affected areas,” PAF said in a statement.
The PAF said the Black Hawk has so far completed nine sorties, significantly contributing to ongoing suppression efforts.
“The mission was carried out in close coordination with the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council VIII (Eastern Visayas), Office of Civil Defense VIII, the Bureau of Fire Protection Eastern Samar, and local government units, ensuring a unified and timely response to the escalating situation,” it added.
Despite sustained operations, the PAF said fire out has not been declared yet, with responders continuing suppression efforts on the ground and in the air.
“The PAF, alongside partner agencies and LGUs (local government units), remains actively engaged in efforts to contain and fully extinguish the blaze. This operation reaffirms the PAF’s unwavering dedication to public service — standing ready to respond, adapt, and deliver when and where it matters most,” it added. (PNA)
